Heat pump sizing: why the load calc stopped being optional

The old gas-furnace world forgave sloppy sizing — a furnace two sizes too big still heated the house, just wastefully. Heat pumps don't extend that grace.

What goes wrong with the wrong size

Oversized: short cycling, poor dehumidification in summer, cold-feeling supply air, premature compressor wear, higher install cost for nothing. Undersized:the backup resistance strips run constantly in winter and the utility bill triples — which becomes a “heat pumps don't work” callback even though the equipment was fine and the sizing wasn't.

The balance point

A proper heat pump design starts with the Manual J heating and cooling loads, then plots equipment capacity (which falls as outdoor temperature drops) against the heating load line. Where they cross is the balance point — below it, supplemental heat carries the difference. Choosing that point deliberately, using your county's design temperature, is the whole game in cold climates.
